Paige Dillon - Small girl making a massive difference to Netball

31/3/2013

Superstars come in all sizes… a netball player, umpire and coach at just 16!

Paige Dillon, recently helped the Trust raising funds and awareness by selling wristies at the Campion secondary school, her netball club Northants JM and at the Loughborough Festival day at Loughborough University.

Paige passed her C umpiring grade at age 15, and recently passed her level 1 coaching. She has volunteered for over 270 hours at netball events local, regional and national level; this includes her being a ball girl at the England V. Jamaica test matches at Birmingham and Sheffield and accompanied the mascot at the recent England V. Australia tests at Bath and Wembley, London.

Paige plans to join us on an NDT tour in a couple of years!

David Livingstone and his team deliver the NDT Mbale Netball Tournament

27/3/2013

Wonderful news from Mbale!

The chairman of the Mbale Netball committee set up by NDT Mr. David Livingstone, who is a teacher at the Wambwa School organised a lovely netball tournament on the 22nd of March, 2013 – this netball tournament featured no fewer than 10 mixed teams!

The teams that took part in the fiercely contested tournament were:
  • Wambwa PS,
  • Namatala PS,
  • Trust PS,
  • Busamaga PS,
  • Nabuyonga PS,
  • Bujoloto PS,
  • Fairway PS,
  • North Road PS,
  • Musoto PS
  • Police PS

The semi-finals were played between Namatala who beat North Road 6-3 and Busamaga who defeated Wambwa 5-3, in the finals Busamaga proved superior to Namatala achieving victory by 12 goals to 9 at the final whistle.

The umpires were helped by Isma and the Mbale Tigers girls. All this would not have been possible without the support of all the teachers from these schools.

It was a bit sad to see that Yoweri and Maluku Schools didn’t turn up for the event.
All in all, an amazing day of netball and three cheers for all the girls and boys who participated!

Happy Flowers!

Trishila Akello's netball training camp in Jinja!

14/3/2013

Trishila Akello, a young leader from Jinja Senior Secondary school, met NDT on the 2011 tour when we challenged the school team to a match. The youngsters thrashed us!

Through their coach Moses, we kept in touch and Trishila and Trinity joined us on the 2012 tour as coaches when we moved to Jinja. Trishila was a fantastic help and often took the lead with groups of children.

Post tour we have stayed in touch and Trishila’s enthusiasm has never ceased. In February 2013, along with a few supportive teachers, she organised training sessions for 3 local schools.

There were 22 girls as, in Trishila’s words “boys are hard to get”, and this is a key principal to NDT tours, where we ensure girls and boys play together at all stages. Coaches Ziyade (Walakuba West school), coach Moses (Jinja SSS), Caroline and Mary (young leaders) helped Trishila with this.

The schools were Help, Daystar and Walukuba West who we have worked with before. All the children were new to netball, so it was a great learning curve for all involved.

On the final day, the 2 teams were called Monica and Julie, for which we at NDT are incredibly proud (blue team – Monica, grey team – Julie).

First time volunteer coach Rachel Bostock took time out to write about her experiences touring with the Trust’s tour to India in November 2012.

She shares her experiences of traveling in a new country, seeing amazing sights and enjoying local delicacies, coaching netball to girls and boys at four schools in Bhubaneswar and her colleagues who kept her busy and entertained over the 10 day tour.
