We've grown our programme in Kenya since 2013. A wonderful volunteer, known affectionately as “Joey”, came to Uganda 2013 and worked his socks off. He went back to Kenya and within weeks had trained up 15 volunteers and had started coaching in primary and secondary schools. As a result of his amazing efforts we ran our first inspiring and highly successful full volunteer tour to Kenya in 2015 and have been back with volunteers every year since. They have even taken the kids and coaches to Uganda to play an international tournament!
We trialled our sanitary pad project here and now have 240 girls and coaches regularly provided with pads, either reusable or disposable, depending on their choice
The team is developing a strong sexual health programme in 2019, working with local information and partners. The main issue in Bungoma county, west Kenya, is teenage pregnancy and so the team are working in local schools to engage the kids in this topic, while encouraging them to play netball. We are collecting more data and insight than ever, and have recruited both a data analyst and sexual health educator, who are both passing their skills onto other volunteers so the legacy continues.
Seven girls from our programme now have scholarships to excellent secondary schools because of their netball prowess and two have been headhunted into another high school. Watch this space for an NDT girl in the national squad!
